In the past year, red wines from the Côtes du Rhône have become my go-to “everyday” reds. I almost always get a smooth, slightly dry, well-balanced red wine that pairs well with a variety of foods. Recently I tried two LCBO Côtes du Rhône reds: the 2010 Ogier Côtes du Rhône Heritages, for $12.95, and the 2009 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône Villages, for $16.95.
I really enjoyed both of these wines, and I’ve put them together in this post because I think they are wonderfully contrasting examples of bargain-priced Côtes du Rhône. The Ogier is dry and spicy, while the La Ferme is smooth and fruit-forward. The La Ferme was my favorite of the two, but at the slightly higher price, I can’t quite call it an “everyday” wine. I think I will be stocking up on the Ogier and grabbing a bottle or two of the La Ferme the next time we host a dinner party.
