Since I don’t have a citrus juicer in Toronto, my standby cocktail here has become the Cosmopolitan. There’s something very satisfying about making myself a vibrant pink drink in a martini glass at the end of the workday.
But then something horrible happened. Something so traumatic that I can barely write about it here. I ran out of Cointreau. No more Cosmos for me. I’m moving in less than a month; buying a new bottle of Cointreau just didn’t make sense. But how was I going to get my pink-cocktail-in-a-martini-glass fix?
I ran to the Internet for a consultation and found the Bonefish Martini, a popular special at the Bonefish Grill chain. It sounded promising but I decided to Cosmo it up by adding lime juice and messing with the proportions of cranberry juice and vodka. I think it turned out pretty well!
The Sparkling Cosmopolitan
1.5 oz cranberry juice
1 oz vodka
0.5 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice
Sparkling wine
Combine cranberry juice, vodka, and lime juice in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake until cold and then strain into a martini glass. Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a slice of citrus if desired.
