The third Italian red I picked up at the LCBO during the “My Italy” promotion was this Fontella 2010 Chianti. It was the priciest of the three wines at $11.95.
Despite my general affection for Italian reds I have a lukewarm relationship with Chianti. Some are terrific food wines but others are too dry and acidic even for me. This fell into the latter category. The Fontella tastes of dark tobacco, a little bit of blackberry and strawberry, herbs and earth. It’s very dry, almost chewy, and can’t really be sipped on its own — yet even a light pasta dish overwhelmed its flavors. It wasn’t terrible but I don’t think I would buy it again.
Rating: Eh, it’s OK
