Undaunted by my less-than-encouraging experience with the Astica Sauvignon-Semillon, I vowed to find a good inexpensive white wine at the LCBO. Inspired by the recent World Cup, I snagged this bottle off the shelf: the 2009 Obikwa Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa, for $8.95.
Verdict: Yum! A vibrant wine full of tropical fruit. I tasted pineapple, starfruit, lime, and just a bit of mango. The acidity gives it tang but isn’t overwhelming. This is a very good under-$10 Sauvignon Blanc, and I’ll be back for more!

Woot! I’ll be on the lookout!
I love South African wines. I still have a bottle saved up from my trip (which I plan to drink when the fellow moves up to Fargo). I highly recommend them.
Ms. Bunny, I just tried the Obikwa Shiraz, and it was also a home run. I clearly need to try more South African wines!
Yeah we drank a lot of shiraz down there. It was definitely one of their strengths. Another I’d recommend is finding a SA pinotage — a cross between pinot noir and cinsaut/hermitage. It’s so good and unlike anything else I’ve ever had.
